The Outdoor Hour - Ants

The Ways of the Ant

My child, behold the cheerful ant,
How hard she works, each day;
She works as hard as adamant
Which is very hard, they say.
--Oliver Herford
This was our first Outdoor Hour and it was a hit. I took the kids to the bottom of our neighbor's yard where there is nice shade and it feels somewhat private. I spread out a blanket and gave them ice pops to eat while we talked a little about ants. Then we went on an ant hunt. Unfortunately there were no ant hills, but we did find plenty of ants. After the girls filled out their notebook page, I read them a chapter out of our current read-aloud, Charlotte's Web. It was a lot of fun.

Savannah was looking at an ant through a loupe.
